Being able to reuse or repurpose household items is vital to saving money. You’ll expand your cash flow exponentially when you get two or three uses out of a household item you previously just tossed in the trash. Whether you’re looking to minimalize your waste or trying to live a more frugal lifestyle, these hacks are perfect to help you further your ambitions. We’ve created a list of widespread household items that can have double or even triple uses for other areas of your home.
1. Aluminum Foil
Aluminum foil is great for cooking or preserving items after you’ve cooked them. But did you know you can also use it to clean your kitchen? That’s right; you can use a wad of aluminum foil to help you scrub your stainless steel pots clean. However, this is not recommended for non-stick skillets or pots, as it can scrape away the non-stick coating.
2. Coat Hangers
Coat hangers are helpful for more than just making space in your closet. With the help of a soda can tab, you can easily double the space you have. Just slide one hanger through one hole on the tab and put a hanger through the other hole, and before you know it, you’ve doubled your useable space. And if you require both hands but want to continue watching your favorite show on AppleTV, you can make a quick tablet or phone holder out of an old wire coat hanger.
3. Vinegar
Vinegar is a highly versatile attribute in any kitchen. It can tenderize meat in a homemade marinade, stop the stinging bite from ants on small children, help remove nasty smells from soured laundry and even remove sweat stains. Add vinegar to water in a 1 to 4 ratio, pour it over the stains, and let sit for one minute.
4. Chalk
Ever spill or splash grease on your new clothes? Now you don’t have to worry about those pesky grease stains. Just rub some regular school-grade chalk over the stains, and let the chalk absorb the oil. If the grease is a heavy stain, cover it with plenty of chalk, and do the same for collar stains. Then launder them to remove the excess chalk.
5. Sponges
Man's best friend can add so much joy to our lives, and so much hair on our clothes. Enter the trusty kitchen sponge. All you have to do to remove pet hair from your couches and other upholstered furniture is lightly dampen a sponge and then run it over the fabric.
6. Nail Polish
If you live in a snowy area, you know something about the dings your windshield can suffer when you drive behind a snowplow. Clear nail polish can help stop cracks in your windshield from getting more significant. Paint it over the damaged tip to prevent any running in the glass. Clear nail polish is also a cheap treatment for ringworm as it suffocates the worm.
7. Vapor Rub
Everyone knows vapor rub is excellent for colds, but did you know it’s also effective against ticks, mosquitos, and gnats? The vital methylation of vapor rub sends these pesky insects running. Just rub a little on your ankles, wrists, and neck before you head out, and you’ll stay happily insect-bite-free.
8. Old Stockings
Always looking for a hair tie? Thanks to this hack, you no longer have to worry about it. All you need is an old pair of stockings. Just cut along the leg parallel to the waistline, and you get a useable hair tie that won’t snag or pull at your hair.
9. Dull Razors
Do you know those pesky little burs that get on your clothing from the fabric used to make your jacket or sweater? Those little balls are called pills, and they are a significant pain. Thankfully a dull razor can help you get rid of them. Just run a dull razor over the area where the pill is, and you’ll no longer need to worry about how your jacket or favorite Christmas sweater looks.
10. Toothbrush
While excellent for helping clean small spaces in your kitchen, a toothbrush can also remove those annoying silk strings from corn on the cob. Just brush along the corn cob with your clean toothbrush, and bye-bye go those silk strings.
11. Cardboard Tubes
My younger children love to play sports announcers with cardboard tubes from paper towels or toilet paper, but they make perfect electrical cord holders. Roll the cord up and press it into the tube; label the tubes for easy sorting, and you have a handy way to keep all your cords neatly organized.
12. Dryer Sheets
If you’re not a fan of aerosol sprays, you can use dryer sheets to get equally great results. Because they make dryer sheets to neutralize static cling, they work great on electronics like televisions and computer monitors to remove dust and keep them dust free for days.
