Food is central to so many activities we participate in growing up that it's no wonder we suffer from nostalgia when we dive into our parent's favorite pizza or order our must-have childhood ice cream. No matter when you were born, some classic dishes will instantly bring your childhood back in technicolor. Here are some nostalgia-inducing foods we love that will make you remember your childhood.
1. Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup
This simple, easy-to-make meal is a staple in many American homes. It's such a simple comfort to create this warm meal that easily reminds me of home whenever I indulge in a great, crispy grilled cheese sandwich and warm, soothing tomato soup.
2. Meatloaf
Meatloaf was a meal my dad loved to make. Always with ground beef and onion and always with a hefty layer of ketchup on top, this tasty meal was like a warm welcome on a cold, blustery winter day.
3. Bubblegum Ice Cream
I didn't have this often as a child, but I can distinctly remember the small pieces of bubblegum that were frozen into the pink ice cream. They were like tiny treasures, making finishing the ice cream well worth the effort.
4. Chicken Stir Fry
My older brother loved chicken stir fry, and every weekend when he came home from college, my mother would make this meal for him. I wouldn't say I liked the water chestnuts, so I loathed this meal, but now I enjoy it. I pick out the chestnuts and toss them to the side.
5. Garden Vegetable Pizza
As far as easy dinners go, garden vegetable pizza is a fun treat to make for yourself or your family. Warm crescent rolls, cream cheese, your favorite vegetables, and shredded cheese: you can't get any more fun when it comes to food than this.
6. Rootbeer Floats
I don't know when they started to close down, but I can remember going to A&W and having my parents order rootbeer floats that they brought straight to our car and hung on the side of our windows. I still make them, and like all childhood treats, they launch me right back to eight years old.
7. Hot Chocolate
Who doesn't enjoy a wonderful hot chocolate with miniature marshmallows and whipped cream when it's freezing outside? It was especially nice if it happened to snow enough to cancel school for the day.
8. Christmas Sugar Cookies
My mom always used to make a batch of these at Christmas and let us decorate them with the several colors of frosting she'd whip up. It is a memory that will live with me forever, even though I didn't pass it on to my own children.
9. Homemade Apple Pie
There's a reason we say as American as Apple Pie. Apple pie is a warm, delicious, wonderful treat that goes well with any meal and is especially popular during holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas.
10. Canned Applesauce
Growing up, my parents had a rather productive garden, so they canned corn, carrots, beets, green beans, and my favorite, applesauce. Let me tell you, opening up a jar of canned applesauce, mixing in a bit of cinnamon and sugar, yum!
11. Corn on The Cob
This simple vegetable was so fun for my seven-year-old self to enjoy. I loved the rich butter flavor and the fun of holding onto the little corncob-shaped skewers that kept your fingers from getting filthy. To this day, it is my favorite way to eat fresh corn.
12. Baked Beans
As a child, I hated baked beans. I didn't like the flavor, the smell, or the texture of those fiber-filled dinner staples. As an adult, I absolutely love them, and since many of my children love them as well, I can enjoy a little nostalgia every time we make them for dinner.
