The notion that all actors live in either Los Angeles or New York is easy to follow when we only see them on the red carpet or at glitzy Hollywood movie premieres. But plenty of actors choose to lead quiet, everyday lives away from the glare of the Hollywood spotlight when they're not promoting their next big project or actively filming on set.
1. Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger
In 2018 Pratt bought a beautiful farm off the Washington State coast, on San Juan Island. Here, he and his wife raise sheep and care for a beautiful Texas longhorn cow. They also love teaching their daughters, Layla and Eloise, and Pratt's son, Jack, about loving animals.
2. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
Wanting to cultivate a more normal life, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban settled in the middle of Dixieland. Urban, a massively successful country music star, is at home close to Nashville, and Kidman loves the country-style life their ranch provides their two daughters, Faith and Sunday.
3. Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg has had a Cinderella story after a stuttering start with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, but recently he seems disenfranchised with Hollywood. His four children are also getting older, and Wahlberg and his wife, Rhea Durham, wanted a place where their children could pursue their dreams. This need led the actor to purchase a beautiful spread near Las Vegas and start to sow some dreams of his own.
4. Jennifer Garner
Actress and mother of four, Garner loves spending time in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, just east of Tulsa. Her mother grew up on a farm there, and now that same farm helps to produce the organic food products that her business, Once Upon a Farm, sells. Not only does Jennifer help create incredibly all-organic baby food, but her creations are also WIC-approved in Florida, Wyoming, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine, and West Virginia.
5. Steve Martin
Actor, comedian, and banjo player Steve Martin spends most of his time in a small town outside Asheville, North Carolina. He also spends much of that time with the Steep Canyon Rangers, a bluegrass band he often collaborates with. His latest album, The Long-Awaited Album, is just some of his incredible banjo playing as the actor and all-around funny man is a very accomplished musician. He and his wife, Ann Stringfield, love the quiet, country life that North Carolina affords them when Steve doesn't have to be on set for his hit Hulu show, Only Murders in the Building, where he stars with longtime friend Martin Short and Selena Gomez.
6. Chip and Joanna Gaines
Best known for their HGTV show Fixer Upper, Chip and Joanna Gaines live on a farm in Waco, Texas. Their active farm features their four children and a slew of farm animals like pigs, goats, and horses. And Chip does the work himself, enjoying the very early morning quiet as he readies the farm for the day.
7. Carrie Underwood
Entirely at home in Nashville, Carrie Underwood and her hockey-loving husband, Mike Fisher, along with their sons, own a beautiful ranch in the heart of the South where she excels in the art of country music.
8. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
Supremely happy with his wife of nearly 11 years in 2023, Ryan Reynolds is a family man at heart. He and Blake Lively spend most of their time on a farm in New York but also own a similar pad in the Welsh neighborhood of Marford, England, which is close to the Wrexham Soccer Club that Reynolds partly owns.
9. Robert Duvall
Known as one of the greatest actors of his generation, Duvall has starred in many Western and Southern-era films, including Lonesome Dove and Tender Mercies. Francis Ford Coppola afforded Duvall his breakthrough role in The Godfather (1972) and catapulted Duvall to his household name status. Now the actor enjoys much of his free time on a beautiful 360-acre farm in Virginia. Duvall said of the farm, "This 360-acre gentleman's farm is the next stop before heaven! It boasts beautiful fields, hundred-year-old willow trees, an incredible pond, and a stone manor that made me feel like I was on the Gone With the Wind set."
10. Mark Ruffalo
Ruffalo basks in the beauty of his home, once an active dairy farm, in the Catskill Mountains of Callicoon, New York, along with his wife, Sunrise, and their three children. The family loves to grow strawberries and hopes to add sheep to their ranch.
11. Jeff Daniels
Daniels, who married his college sweetheart in 1979, decided that Michigan was a better fit for raising their three children than Los Angeles. So, in 1986, he and his wife, Kathleen Treado, moved their family back to Michigan, where they spend most of their time on the family farm in Chelsea, a small town southeast of Lansing.
12. Michael Keaton
Ever the avid ranch life lover, Keaton recently owned two ranches, one in Santa Monica and another in Montana. However, the upkeep got to be too much as the Santa Monica farm was just a weekend getaway and a convenient place to keep his horses during winter. So, the well-known actor who starred in Batman and comedies like Multiplicity and Mr. Mom put his Santa Monica farm up for sale. With plans to expand the 565-acre Montana ranch to suit his style better, the 71-year-old Keaton is living his best life.
